The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran: Reason, Passion, and Knowing Yourself (Part 4)

Do we need to choose between following our head and following our heart?

In Part Four of The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran explores reason and passion, pain, and self-knowledge.

Four ideas stood out to me: reason needs passion and passion needs reason, pain can give us information, we shouldn’t waste the difficult experiences we inevitably face, and finding a path doesn’t mean we’ve found the path for everyone else.

Gibran’s image of reason as the rudder and passion as the sails may say it best: we need enough passion to move and enough reason to steer.

Until next time, remember: the answers are older than we are—and just as relevant today.
