How can we change our habits if we don’t even notice we’re doing them?
In Chapter Four of Atomic Habits, James Clear explains why awareness is the first step toward building better habits and breaking bad ones.
Three ideas stood out to me: you can’t change what you don’t notice, saying your actions out loud can interrupt automatic behavior, and taking inventory of your daily habits helps reveal what’s working and what isn’t.
Clear introduces two practical tools: pointing and calling and the habit scorecard. Both help us recognize the routines we follow without thinking.
Before trying to change everything, maybe we should simply pay attention to what we’re already doing.
Until next time, remember: small choices become habits, habits shape who we become, and change happens one day at a time.
