Can we build a meaningful life while trying to avoid everything uncomfortable?
In Part Three of The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran takes on joy and sorrow, houses, and clothes—three topics that turn out to have more in common than you might expect.
Four ideas stood out to me: joy and sorrow come as a package deal, comfort makes a wonderful servant but a terrible master, our homes should prepare us for life rather than hide us from it, and eventually the person underneath the clothes shows through.
Maybe the goal isn’t to eliminate discomfort. Maybe it’s to build a life worth occasionally being uncomfortable for.
And yes, I’m still keeping the recliner.
Until next time, remember: the answers are older than we are—and just as relevant today.
