Why are bad habits so easy to repeat while good habits can be so difficult to maintain?
In Chapter Fifteen of Atomic Habits, James Clear introduces the fourth and final law of behavior change: Make It Satisfying.
Four ideas stood out to me: getting started is only half the battle, bad habits offer immediate rewards while good habits often take time to pay off, our brains naturally favor immediate gratification, and finding satisfaction in the process makes good habits easier to maintain.
From enjoying a piece of cake to finding motivation for an early morning walk, I reflect on why immediate rewards have such a powerful influence on our choices—and how we can use that knowledge to our advantage.
The secret to lasting change isn’t just knowing that something will benefit us tomorrow. It’s finding a reason to enjoy doing it today.
Until next time, remember: small choices become habits, habits shape who we become, and change happens one day at a time.
