Atomic Habits by James Clear: The Best Way to Start a New Habit (Chapter 5)

Why do our best intentions so often fail to become lasting habits?

In Chapter Five of Atomic Habits, James Clear explains how to turn good intentions into consistent actions using two simple strategies: implementation intentions and habit stacking.

Three ideas stood out to me: get specific about when and where you’ll act, attach new habits to routines you already have, and build systems that eliminate unnecessary decisions.

I also share how I’m applying these ideas to my own morning routine—using my daily dog walk as the starting point for a new exercise habit.

The secret isn’t necessarily having more motivation. Sometimes it’s simply making the decision ahead of time and creating a system that’s easy to follow.

Until next time, remember: small choices become habits, habits shape who we become, and change happens one day at a time.
